WOW, a community health initiative coalition, formed in August 2005 as a direct response to a health care needs assessment conducted by Open Door Family Medical Centers. It is the goal of the Coalition to raise awareness about health disparities impacting women of color and empowering them to take charge of their health status. Through a grassroots wellness program WOW has initiated health education and screening events utilizing community health workers improve the health of those in Northern Westchester. This grassroots health initiative is made possible through funding received from the NYS Department of Health-Office of Minority Health Community Partnerships Program, obtained by the Open Door Family Medical Centers.

The WOW Coalition founding member organizations include representatives from the medical and social service sectors, faith-based institutions, businesses and schools, as well as community leaders and government officials. These include: Open Door Family Medical Centers, American Heart Association, Westchester County Office of African American Affairs, Westchester Association of Black Social Workers, Lower Hudson Valley Perinatal Network, May Kay Cosmetics, Westchester Region of NAACP, Westchester Children’s Association, Changing Healthier Outcomes by Improving Cardiovascular Education and Screenings (CHOICES), LINKS, Inc. – Greater Hudson Valley, and Westchester County Department of Health.

Community Health Workers

Community Health Workers are community volunteers that provide one-onone education and counseling to the target population, as well as health education at community events and health fairs.

Coalition Members

TheWOW coalition is currently comprised of members representing a broad spectrum of women of color, from different backgrounds, professions and ages who reside in Westchester County, New York. All members provide input in setting the WOW mission, goals, objectives and activities of the coalition. The WOW coalition implements its mission with the following committees: Steering, Education, Evaluation, Public Relations and Community Outreach.
